Edinburgh Film Podcast – Episode 53

Chantal Akerman and Golden Eighties with Professor Marion Schmid

This episode of the podcast celebrates the work of the great Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman, with a special focus on one of her lesser-known films, the 1986 musical Golden Eighties.

Our guide to all things Akerman is Marion Schmid. Marion is Professor of French Literature and Film at the University of Edinburgh and the author of several books and articles on Akerman, including a 2010 monograph for Manchester University Press.

Marion and I begin by discussing Jeanne Dielman, Akerman’s 1975 masterpiece which famously topped Sight & Sound’s once-a-decade Greatest Films of All Time poll in 2022.

We then move on to Golden Eighties, a vibrant, effervescent musical which tells of the romantic intrigues in a Brussels shopping centre and stars Jeanne Dielman herself, Delphine Seyrig.

You can listen to the episode via Apple Podcasts or Media Hopper.

Pasolini and the Classics | Pasolini 100

To mark the 100th anniversary of the iconic Italian poet, filmmaker, playwright, novelist, and critic Pier Paolo Pasolini, our colleague Dr Emanuela Patti organised a programme of events on Pasolini and the Classics, supported by the Society for Italian Studies and held by Italian Studies at University of Edinburgh and the Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh. The Pasolini 100 series focused on the intensive and extensive relations Pasolini had with other cultural figures, offering a unique entry point to his oeuvre. “The Classics” ranged from authors of the world literary tradition, to cultural icons of cinema, the visual and performative arts. This series of podcasts brings together all the recorded events from the series, together with a podcast episode featuring an interview with the organiser Dr Emanuela Patti.
